Joe Rocket Hemp Jacket - X-Large/Black/Sand Review
The Hemp jacket was designed as a comfortable and sustainable alternative to leather, polyester & nylon. It is karmic balance for the pollution caused in making synthetic fibers and farming cattle. The Hemp jacket is not said to be superior to other riding jacket but it is a very nice jacket. I love my Hemp jacket. It's comfortable, looks cool and provides adequate protection. I give it 5 stars but I'm bias as I designed it.The Joe Rocket Hemp jacket is has an outshell made from woven Hemp yarn. Most natural materials like cotton are knitted, the hemp jacket is unusual as it is woven. The inside coating of the material is poly urethane. The original test samples were uncoated Hemp and the wind blew right through them. A coating was added to improve wind, water and abrasion resistance. The first production run was incorrectly labeled as nylon. Even the untrained eye would be able to see that this material is not nylon. This is a regrettable error and we are disappointed in our Asian inspection team.
Hemp has excellent tensile strength. It is often used for rope. Tensile strength is important in a crash. When the garment contacts the road surface it often "grabs" the rider inside the garment continues forward at the speed of crash for a few inches. This often results in "leather burn". The looser the garment the farther the rider moves before the slack is taken out of the garment at this point the garment experiences a snap of force that can pop seams or tear panels. In this case tensile strength is very important. Abrasion resistance is also important after the initial snap. At this point the garment heats up and gradually abrades. Most non leather Joe Rocket garments are made from polyester. Polyester is made from coal. It has a melting point of about 450F. In a crash a garment can experience that sort of heat in a prolonged slide. This heat causes serious skin damage. Hemp and cotton a good insulators and reduce this affect. If a polyester garment starts to melt then it happens on a very small scale and the result is fibers start to separate. The garment does not turn to liquid. The fibers start to melt, pull away and cool. I have been in this business for 25+ years. I have examined 100's of crashed garments. I have never seen a garment melt and stick to skin. Never. This is a tale told by seasonal know it all employees at motorcycle dealerships.
At Joe Rocket we test our material for abrasion and tensile strength. We occasionally test other factors like strength after washing and strength after U.V. exposure. We target 3000 cycles in a test conducted at ACT testing lab or SGS testing lab. We never publish the results of our abrasion testing. We never use this data for marketing. We use this data in an effort to improve our garments. The denier of a fabric has a small affect on abrasion resistance. The coating on the inside and outside of the garment has a huge affect. A well coated 200d polyester will perform better then an uncoated 600D polyester. Abrasion testing is often the result of tall tales told at dealerships.
The previous reviewer stated that the dealer would not take it back. That is a big problem. We work with our dealers to be sure customer service is smooth. Please contact customer service at joerocket.com and let us know about that dealer. If you need additional information please contact customer service and ask them to send a message to Marc.
As a last note, the jacket has a generous cut. For best safety buy one size smaller then your normally wear. A snug jacket is much safer then a lose one.
