I installed this sump on my 2003 Duramax along with an AirDog lift pump. The kit is made so that the sump can be installed without removing the fuel tank. HOWEVER, when I cut the hole in the bottom of the tank there was so much grit and junk on the bottom of the tank that I removed anyway to clean it out - and I recommend that anyone installing one of these on a truck that is not new do the same thing, because when you install a sump, everything that is on the bottom of the tank has the potential of going into the fuel system. The sump solved my biggest problem, which was my truck stopping from fuel starvation when the guage reading down to just under 1/4 tank. Since I installed the sump I have run a full tank of fuel all the way down to below 'E' and learned that I had a low fuel light and alarm that I had never seen before. When I filled the tank back up I found that I still had 2 gallons of diesel in the tank. I now have a lot more confidence that I won't end up sitting on the side of the road if I let the fuel level get down to 1/4, and I don't have to fill up as often.
