03-10 Honda Element (Excl Sc Model) Black Nerf Step Side Bars Review

I wish I can say this is a GREAT bar, but it simply is not. But for the cost it is GOOD (as expected), I wish Honda didn't charge a crazy amount for something so simple

The bars arrived at my door quick, it even has a label on it saying it's for an Element. Installations is pretty straight forward. I would suggest that you separate all the screws, nuts and washers BEFORE you even do anything so you know which one goes where, you should not have any extra screws/nut/washers at all. Remember to only finger tighten everything until the very end.

I have TWO "problems" with this product:

1.) The original OEM version has THREE brackets that attaches to the body. At first I didn't think it mattered too much, until I stepped on it and see that there is a little give (I'm 6'1"/200lbs). After the installation, I realized why Honda made three brackets...The way the rear bracket connects to the chassis makes it not at strong as the front. If you look at the OEM ones (http://www.handa-accessories.com/element/08steps.pdf) you can see that the way the front bracket screws in lends more support when weight is put on it. The rear bracket could possibly bend because it's just held in with two screws . Since these aftermarket bars don't have the center bracket, all the weight is on just those two screws. I know I can bounce on the front end all day and it would be okay, but if I did that on the rear part of the bar it would most likely warp. I got these bars for two reason. I wanted passengers to be able to get on/off easier and I wanted to be able to get to access the roof rack easier. I guess I will find out how well this holds up this winter.

2.) the rear end of the bar sticks out further than the front end. The front mounting bracket has a bit of room for slight adjustments, but it's not enough to make the bars parallel to the car body. it's minor, but noticeable....on both sides.

In closing, for 1/3 to 1/4 the cost of what Honda wants to gouge from you, it's worth it. Just don't trust the rear end to be a solid support. In terms of the look. it's seems to stick out a bit more than the Honda version, but it is by no means ugly or obtrusive.
